I want TOTAL focus on our '25' Book Count!!!

Be advised that this will count as a grade so do your BEST to reach this goal!!!!

EOC's will be on Monday & Tuesday and this will cover Reading Comprehension and grammar. Students should use the strategies we have worked on all year such as reading the questions prior to the passage, the elimination strategy with incorrect answers, and predicting the text. This is just a suggestion for some strategies to use on this exam!

Welcome Back!

Spring Break is almost over but I hope you enjoyed every minute of it as I DID!!!

We will begin our Drama Unit for the last nine weeks of this school year!! Yea!!

Parents & Students - If you have any Playbill's at home, please send to school so we may see different examples and types of different plays. Thanks!

Students will create a final product - a Playbill to demonstrate their understanding of the purpose and elements of a drama. We will begin this in class on Monday and Tuesday and students will complete at home. We as a class will decide on a due date!

Read 30 minutes nightly to continue your goal of reading 25 books. Students will log their nightly reading into their new 9 weeks reading log. Each student also have the choice to continue working in Compass Odyssey.

Gifted Students will continue working on their Living Museum project. We will present our Living Museum on April 17th during 5th & 6th Periods!!!

I will divide the classes up to bring snack to ensure we will have enough for a two-day span.

(If you will send drinks, you can send those early as I will ice them down so they can be ready)

Some tips to remember!

Remember to:
Get plenty of rest the night before testing.
Set an alarm and ask someone to check to make sure I am up in plenty of time.
Shower in the morning to feel more alert.
Eat a good breakfast before leaving for school.
Arrive at school on time on testing days.
Check the schedule every day, so that I know what to expect.
Answer every question, even those that are difficult. (There is no penalty for guessing.)
Read all the answer choices before deciding on the best answer.
Avoid spending too much time on any one item. (This is a timed test.)
Keep my concentration throughout the test.
Write on the test to help me think.
Check frequently to make sure I am in the right place on my answer sheet. (Getting off by one number can be disastrous!)
Take a deep breath or stretch a little bit every now and then to stay alert.

We need and would love to have some more Kleenex and Clorox wipes as well!

We also have gone through (3) Electric Pencil Sharpeners?? We are in desperate need of one or two that is very sturdy as you can imagine how many pencils are sharpened on a daily basis??!

This week in class we will initiate the beginning process for creating our very own Webquest. This week in class we will actually get all information, resources, Internet websites, collaboration with peers and Ms. Kimbrough. On next week, we will use the Mac computer and continue our adventure with our very first Webquest!

Writing Portfolio's

Hello All,

We are almost half way through this academic year!! At the close of this nine weeks we will have completed (6) writing pieces in our writing portfolio's. The portfolio's are kept in class but students are allowed to take home the pieces to complete and then return to their folders. I have also given each student a table of contents and a rubric for their essay writing as well. Please be advised that each nine weeks each student will receive a grade for this piece.

Hello,

All classes were in the computer lab today! Each student were asked to log into phschool.com and take the self-test for our last unit. I was shocked and very displeased that a large number of my students had no idea of how to navigate on this site. This leads me to think they have not been using this as a tool or resource for studying and preparing for each selection test??

Ask your child how they did on the quiz and encourage them to spend more time on the website and become more familiar with it???!!!

It is a valuable tool!

Annotation Forms

Hello,

I checked ALL annotation forms today for our '25' Book Count standard. I have only a few since this 9 wks. began to turn the forms in. I smiled but for the most part I know that my students are reading far more than the forms I checked off for today. :-(

Please encourage your students to complete these forms, get your signature and then (here's the hard part) log them in correctly in the notebook in class.

Be mindful, we ask that our students read on level and each book should contain around 150 words. If by chance, the book is larger I will give credit accordingly. If a book has around 450-500 pages, I will give credit for (3) books! So let's read, read, read and then read some more!

I would like to have more than '12' students to meet their reading goal for this 9 wks!

The requirements for each 9 wks. are 6 books, 7 books (Christmas Break), 6 books, 6 books = 25 Books per !!

Identifying Author's Purpose

Hey there,

We will work on identifying and understanding exactly what the author's purpose in each selection we read. It is very important to understand their point of view and why they wrote their selection. With this knowledge under our belts we will be knowledgeable when asked to answer these types of questions.

Progress reports for the first three weeks were sent home and we are well on our way!

Please stay in close contact with me if you have any concerns or questions about your child's grades or current average in my class.

Engrade has a mind of its own so let's not totally rely on that source.

Hey there,

Things are moving swiftly along EXCEPT for Engrade. There are still some issues with speed and accuracy. No worries. Progress reports will be given out next week.

Today in the computer lab we took the End of the Quarter Summative Assessment. Your child will share their score with you. I am in the process of trying to input to Engrade but no luck. Hopefully, you can see the grade from "The Shutout" by now???

I would like for you to keep encouraging your child. I know some have gotten comfortable with being 'successful' but remind them as I have that hard work goes along with success!

I appreciate all that you do and keep up the good work! Yes, I'm speaking to "My Parents"!!!

The 1st 9 wks. are over!! Yea! Just a few reminders, please continue to log your reading logs! Stay on top of homework as well as daily assignment using your agenda! Kudos to all of you who did very well this 9 wks. but please keep working hard and continue to grow and learn! To those who did not do as well as expected continue to stay focused and work just a little harder and study more!

We will start our non-fiction unit this 9 wks.! We will have a pre-assessment to determine where we are and where we need to go! This will not count as a grade as I will only use for determining strengths and weaknesses.

This nine weeks has flown by.........
We will test for the first part of the week and then begin our next section of non-fiction in our textbook!
I hope that we have the rituals and routines of Julia Landon under our belts now!
I look for better understanding in my classroom!
Engrade still is under the weather. There have been many parents trying to contact them but no one has heard back from them. Rest assured, engrade on my end is fine and I also have a hard copy of ALL grades so no worries!!!

I'm very happy right now as the Jags just defeated the Denver Broncos!! Go Jags!!

Wow, we are approaching the end of our 1st 9 wks. as a sixth grader???!! How exciting!!! How do you feel? Are you smarter? Older? (Smiling)

I want to let you know when the end is near so are EXAMS!! I have asked all students to write down in their planners the 13th and 14th for ELA assessments!

We will have a post-assessment in accordance with the pre-assessment to determine growth and need. This grade for the post assessment will not be recorded or entered on engrade.

Resources available for preparing for next week is to review study guides, voc. terms and literary analysis assignments. Students also should utilize phschool.com as a valuable resource tool as well as Compass Odyssey and FCAT explorer! Good Luck!

Summer Reading is due on Sept. 29th! Students will have the wonderful opportunity to participate in Socratic Seminars! We will have great discussions about our books, Lord of the Deep and Elijah of Buxton! Yea!

We will have our next Selection test on Tuesday as well!

Progress Reports will come home this week! I'm proud of my students and their progress in the sixth grade at Julia Landon!

Make certain that your child has completed both writing pieces and they are in the 'yellow' folder. Speak with them about these assignments and see how they are progressing with their writing!

Can you believe this nine weeks is almost over?? Time goes by fast when you are having FUN!!! Are we having fun yet??

Keep reading and recording and being very conscience about school and your responsibilities!

My Test/ Writer's Workshop

Hello,

My Test, the computer program had a glitch last week so we actually took the test via paper and pen/pencil. I only graded it for comprehension but students received their scores! The program is now up and running so Team A will take the Formative Mini Assessment with Mrs. Putnal as she's on the schedule this work for the computer lab!

All classes will work very diligently on their writing pieces to edit and complete their final draft for their portfolio's. Students will have a cover page which will tell them what should be in their portfolio that we will keep in the classroom.

We took our second Selection test from the story, Becky and the Wheel-and-Brake Boys on Friday! Students grades are increasing as well as their comprehension and understanding of this type of test format. I am pleased with the progress that is being made by all students and the care of concern of my parents!

As for the Jags, I hope we will be victorious TODAY!!!! Go Jags!!

Friday is College Day so encourage your student to support their favorite college!!

Go Jags!!!

First, I'm very excited about a new program that Duval County has implemented, My Test!!

This program will allow our students to take various assessments on the computer. This is wonderful as this system will grade the assessment on the spot and this will save on copies which eventually save on trees (Going Green)!! ;-0

Our first opportunity will be on Thursday, Sept. 18th as we will venture to Compass Odyssey. The think my class will be the guinea pig???!!!

This program will assess and assist the students with incorrect answer if a student miss a question it will send them to a link with information about the correct answer, how cool is that?? My students will have the opportunity to take this assessments (3) times to ensure comprehension. I very excited about "My Test"!!!

Please continue documenting in reading Logs nightly and checking agenda's daily as students are asked to write down homework and well as classwork so they can stay on top of things and you as a parent can be aware of what was covered in class that day!

Be sure to check engrade and view the calendar for the entire week. It will always be posted before Monday of that approaching week! Go Jags!!!!

Dragon, Dragon

Go Jags!!

Students are to complete their Take Home test from Dragon, Dragon this weekend. We will review in class on Monday and they will take their Selection test on Tuesday! The Take Home test will be checked for understanding while the Selection Test will be graded.

Students should use the Open Book test as their "Study Guide"!! Go Gators as I watch and type!! I can't wait until tomorrow to watch "My Jags" at Tennessee!!

Progress Reports will be given out on Monday so look for those to come home!!!

Check Engrade and view the calendar for each week of work!

Lastly, I will check Reading logs on Monday and I will check for the entire week, Sun. - Mon.!

Hello,

I'm really enjoying my weekend! I went to a few garage sales and found some more items to add to my already "GREAT" Jag collection!

Open House is Tuesday, Sept. 2nd @ 6 p.m. I will ask your parents questions to determine how well you have informed them about how Ms. Kimbrough's class functions???

I will ask them (10) questions about rituals and routine of my class!

I hope you have given them all of the information I have given YOU!! Information like homework, classwork, blogs, supplies, textbooks, rules, grades (engrade log in sheets), D.E.A.R., etc.

I look forward to meeting your parents as I have 'A Million Things to share with them'!! :-)

Remember, you are to read NIGHTLY for 30 minutes!! I will record grades on Tues. for the previous week! Reading is fundamental!

School has begun............

Hooray!

The first day of school is done and it was fun!!

All students received information for Engrade so go ahead and get set up!

Be mindful to read every night for 30 minutes and record information into yoru reading logs.

Be sure to have your summer reading complete by the second week of school and the due date is Aug. 29th! I have completed Lord of the Deep and I liked it a lot! Mikey is a good character, fisher, son and friend! I am now on Ch. 12 of Elijah of Buxton and I like this one too! I guess I feel this way because I am the ELA teacher and those acronyms means - English Language Arts!

I look forward to a wonderful year!!
